Windy Hill Fitness Centre takes up teen obesity fight

Given all the factors in our favour, it has to come as a surprise that this time last year we were labelled as the world’s fattest nation after credible research by Baker IDI Heart and Diabetes Institute found 26% of Australian’s are obese.

Winning the fight against this infamous title will be won ultimately by our youth believes Windy Hill Fitness Centre Manager, Mr. Scott McDonald.

“As a qualified physical educator with over 10 years experience in the leisure and fitness industry, to me this battle is about educating our kids and giving them the knowledge, leadership and options that will have them engage in activity as much as they do their more sedentary past times.”

In taking up this fight, Windy Hill Fitness Centre as a high profile community fitness centre is taking up the fight on multiple fronts.

“We have just launched an exciting new fund raising option for primary schools called 10 for 10” says Mr. McDonald.

Some time ago, Victorian Premier John Brumby denounced the common practice in schools of selling chocolates to raise much needed funds, something that Mr. McDonald saw as an opportunity for his fitness centre.

“In response to Mr. Brumby’s comments about fund raising practices, we felt we could offer fitness as an alternative to chocolates and this has been exceptionally well received by our local schools”.

Further to this initiative, the cornerstone of the fitness centre’s approach to this national problem is a new program for teens between the ages of 13 and 17.

Mr. McDonald goes on to say, “Unfortunately, the fitness industry has not offered a lot in the way of quality fitness programs for teenagers that provide the leadership and knowledge that lead to long term results for their participants. We have packaged a program led by professionals that will inspire and mentor our young people to go onto leading a healthy lifestyle, for life”.

“Significantly, these programs don’t include the normal cost and commitment constraints that some fitness club memberships do and in fact, the program features terms that reflect the demands of this specific age group”.

“We are enormously excited about introducing a whole new part of our community to the benefits of healthy living and ultimately, we hope this will have an impact on the health challenges facing the local community in the future”.
