One afternoon last September whilst reading through some emails as my toddler napped, I came across the Windy Hill Members’ Newsletter. Although my son was enrolled in the swimming program, it had been a long time since I had been a member of any gym. Out of interest, I opened the newsletter and read about each of the services that the centre offered. It was the article advertising Outdoor Overhaul that grabbed my attention.
I had heard about “Boot Camp” before, but the thought of being yelled at as I put my body through pain was not my idea of fun. The Outdoor Overhaul program sounded different so, on a whim, I phoned Rikki to find out more. From that first phone call, I knew that the program was something that I should try.
In the spirit of full disclosure I should reveal a couple of facts – I hadn’t exercised in eight years (other than walking), I hate early mornings, and I don’t run (not ever). But, I really wanted to get fit and strong and Rikki convinced me that the instructors catered for all levels of fitness and were very encouraging. She explained that the program was organised so that you never felt like you were holding up the fitter members of the group and you were never put down for your inability to do any of the exercises. She was so convincing that I signed up for the six week program - knowing that I would be returning to exercise after a long hiatus, getting up at 5:30 three mornings a week and probably being required to run. What was I thinking?
I enjoy Outdoor Overhaul so much that I’m now doing my third program. It’s been a great journey to fitness. I started very slowly. In my first session Dave asked us to do a slow warm up lap of the oval. I had no idea whether I’d even be able to complete a full lap, but I managed to make my way around. We also completed a fitness test during that first session requiring us to do push ups, sit ups, burpees, shuttle runs, dips, squats, star jumps and a 12 minute run. By the time we came to the run I was exhausted and remember walking my way around the centre square, barely breaking stride! I worked so hard in that first session, after such a long time of sedentary activity. My body was in shock - so much so that I had to stop on the drive home to throw up on the side of the road.
Somewhere along the way, however, I started enjoying exercising. I felt stronger, fitter and more toned. Surprisingly, I began to love running and discovered that sunrise is the best part of the day.
The instructors of the Outdoor Overhaul program have been great. Dave has a way of encouraging you so that you push yourself that little bit further even when you think you’ve got nothing left to give. Every session is planned and delivered with enthusiasm and motivation. I leave the oval knowing that I’ve had a great workout and that my strength and fitness continues to improve.
Although it was offered, I didn’t do any pre program measurements or weigh in. But, I now exercise regularly, get up at 5:30 three mornings a week, feel fit and strong and can run 5 kilometres without stopping. For me, that’s all the measurement I need.
